Concerning suicide rates in Korea: an expected role of Korean scholarly world
Kim Jeoung-Hee

Abstract
Suicide is ongoing social problem in Korea according to the data produced by Statistical Korea. Although Korean government and civil organizations tried to reduce this objective condition for years, the rate is continuously increasing. It seems to be caused by unfulfilled concern about the subjectivity among members of Korean society. Producing the subjective concern is an expected role of the Korean scholarly world. Thus, this paper"s consideration is on their concerns about this problem.
To analyze their concerns, data from Statistics Korea and journal articles provided by KERIS during 1998~2008 were used. A total 104 articles from 48 journals were finally analyzed. Statical rates regarding suicide, publishing years of the articles, journal"s status evaluated by NRF, scholarly field, purpose of the study, subject of the study, independent variable, problematic area, name of the problematic area, and completion level of the abstract were employed. Findings were produced by frequency analysis and cross-tabulation.
Registered journals were 80% and members of social science were interested in this issue the most. The most preferred purpose of the study was a basic profiling. Adolescence was the most interested subject. Stress/depression was the most frequently chosen single independent variable. There was no study on the problematic area. Study method and conclusion were week parts among 4 sections of the abstract.
It was found that there have been no sufficient concerns of Korean scholarly world in relation to the ongoing social problem called suicide.
